Rive

A runtime for interactive 2D animation with state machines, used in product UIs where Lottie or video would be too static or too heavy.

01What it is

In production terms.

Rive editors produce vector animation with state machines that web, iOS, Android, Flutter, and game runtimes can play. Inputs from the product, hover, progress, reduced motion, drive the same file.

Codeaxes picks Rive when motion must react to user state without shipping a video or rewriting easing in code. It sits between Lottie (simple loops) and a full game engine.

02Fit

Best-fit use cases.

  1. 01Interactive onboarding that advances on user actions
  2. 02Themed empty and success states with reduced-motion fallbacks
  3. 03Mascot or character UI that responds to product events
  4. 04Shared motion files across web and mobile clients

03Trade-offs

Benefits and limits.

Benefits

  • State machines keep interaction in the asset, not only in app code
  • Smaller and more controllable than many video or GIF stand-ins
  • One source can feed multiple platforms
  • Designers can iterate without a full engineering rewrite of timing

Limitations

  • Team needs Rive editor skill, not only After Effects muscle memory
  • Complex illustration still needs a performance budget
  • Not a replacement for Spine-style game combat cycles

04Ecosystem

Compatible technologies.

05In the field

Example applications.

  • SaaS onboarding sequence that pauses for form completion
  • Settings illustration that switches theme at runtime
  • In-app explainer replacing a YouTube embed
