Terraform

HashiCorp Terraform describes cloud infrastructure as code so accounts, networks, and services can be reviewed and reproduced.

01What it is

In production terms.

Terraform plans and applies declarative configuration against AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, and other providers. State tracks what exists so changes are diffs, not guesswork in a console.

Codeaxes uses Terraform for landing zones and environment parity. A second region or a new staging account should be a apply, not a remembered click path.

02Fit

Best-fit use cases.

  1. 01Org, IAM, and network landing zones
  2. 02Repeatable staging and production stacks
  3. 03Module libraries for product teams who should not reinvent VPCs
  4. 04Tracked changes for audit and rollback of infrastructure

03Trade-offs

Benefits and limits.

Benefits

  • Reviewable diffs before anything is created
  • Environments that match by construction
  • Multi-cloud providers with one workflow
  • State and modules that survive staff changes

Limitations

  • State locking and secrets need a real backend, not a laptop file
  • Drift still happens if people click in the console
  • Provider coverage and version constraints require discipline

04Ecosystem

Compatible technologies.

05In the field

Example applications.

  • AWS organization with SSO, separate prod, and tagged cost allocation
  • GKE or EKS cluster plus supporting data stores defined in modules
  • Preview environments spun from the same modules as production
